What is Backrunning?

Backrunning is the placement of a transaction after another transaction to act on the state changes it creates. In decentralized trading, a backrun may arbitrage prices after a swap or respond to a lending position becoming eligible for liquidation.

How does Backrunning work?

A searcher identifies a state-changing transaction, evaluates the resulting opportunity, and submits a transaction or bundle intended to execute after it. The ordering mechanism depends on the chain and submission service.

What should trading bot developers know about Backrunning?

Observing a target transaction does not guarantee adjacency or inclusion. Backrunning differs from frontrunning because its intended action follows the target rather than preceding it.
